BC celebrated its first Family Day on February 11th, 2013. It was a little rainy, but the Mark Rice Real Estate Group hopes that you had a great day and were able to spend some quality time with your loved ones.
There were free events throughout our city to mark the holiday’s inauguration. Downtown, crowds flocked to a live music festival on the waterfront. There were also special events held in the Royal BC Museum and the Crystal Pool offered free swimming for the day. Downtown Victoria is normally a pretty lively place on weekends, but Monday was especially bustling as parking was free.
This excitement is well warranted. We in BC have watched our neighbors enjoy February long weekends for a while, as we diligently worked through the months between New Years and Good Friday without a reprieve.
Alberta instituted their Family Day back in 1990, Saskatchewan followed suit in 2007 and Ontario did it the year after that. Prince Edward Island and Manitoba also announced holidays in February, but gave them different names (Islander Day and Louis Riel Day respectively). Let’s not forget our American friends. They have always celebrated their President’s Day in February to honor their first president George Washington.
So yes, you could say we are just a little excited that Family Day is finally here! We will enjoy it for many years to come.
